Annual Tax Sale will be held on March 24, 2011

Property Taxes

The Borough of Bernardsville is a calendar year municipality and tax bills are generally mailed in June/July of each year. Familiarize yourself with the tax bill. It contains valuable information, such as, assessment value, the yearly tax rate and its breakdown (how your dollar is spent), the legal description of your property, state aid to the town, etc. In addition, the tax bill will have the following payment stubs:

Third Quarter: Due August 1st (Covers Jul, Aug, Sept)
Fourth Quarter: Due November 1st (Covers Oct, Nov, Dec)
First Quarter: Due February 1st (Covers Jan, Feb, Mar)
Second Quarter: Due May 1st (Covers Apr, May, Jun)

If your financial institution is paying your taxes, your original tax bill will be mailed to that bank. You will receive an advice copy to keep for your records. All payments are due on the first, with a ten-day grace period. Interest will be charged at a rate of 8% per annum on the first $1500 of delinquency and 18% on any balance over $1500. A 6% end-of-year penalty will be charged to any account with a balance of $10,000 and over on December 31st.

When selling your property, the tax bill MUST be handed over to the new owner at the time of closing.

Sewer User Fees

If you are connected to the public sewer, you will be billed for sewer fees. The sewer fees are based on water consumption of the previous year and are billed bi-annually. The first six-month payment is due April 15th, and the second six-month payment is due October 15th. Interest for late payments is calculated the same as the property taxes.

Deductions

Applications for qualifying senior citizens and veterans deductions and instructions are available on our website under the forms tab or by clicking here.

Tax Searches

A $10.00 fee and a written request is required for any searches done for property taxes or sewer user fees.
