Tax Collector

The Tax Department is responsible for the billing, collection, reporting, and enforcement of taxes within the municipality. In addition, we also bill, collect, and report sewer user fees for the properties connected to the public sewer.

The Borough also offers residents a method to pay their Property Tax and Sewer Bills by authorized a direct debit from their checking accounts by filling in authorization forms. View the forms on the online forms page.

  • Q:

    When are taxes due?

    A:

    The Borough of Bernardsville is a calendar year municipality and tax bills are generally mailed in June/July of each year.

    The tax bill contains valuable information, such as the assessed value of your property, the annual tax rate, the legal description of your property, and state aid.

    The tax bill contains four payment stubs: Third Quarter: Due August 1st (covers July, August & September) Fourth Quarter: Due November 1st (covers October, November and December) First Quarter: Due February 1st (covers January, February & March) Second Quarter: Due May 1st (covers April, May and June) There is a ten day grace period for payment of taxes, with all payments due in the tax office no later than the 10th of the month when they are due. Interest will be charged at a rate of 8% per annum on the first $1,500 of delinquency and 18% on any balance over $1,500. a 6% year end penalty will be charged to any account with a balance of $10,000 and over on 12/31.

    Why do I receive a bill that says "for advice only" when my mortgage company pays my taxes?

    A:

    If your fiancial instituion is paying your taxes, your original bill will be mailed to the mortgage company. You will receive an "advice" copy, to keep for your records. If your begin paying your taxes, instead of your mortgage company, during the tax billing cycle, begin using the advice copy you received as your tax bill.

    What is my responsibility with regard to my tax bill when I sell my property?

    A:

    When selling your property, the tax bill MUST be handed over to the new owner at the time of closing. The new owner will be responsible for the remaining payments on the tax bill.

    When are sewer user fees due?

    A:

    If you are connected to public sewer, you will be billed for sewer fees. The sewer fees are based on water consumption of the previous year and are billed bi-annually. The first six-month payment is due April 15th, and the second six-month payment is due October 15th. There is a ten day grace period for payment of sewer bills. Any sewer fees remaining unpaid 9 (nine) calendar days following the due date are subject to interest, calculated at the same rate as property taxes.

    What deductions and/or rebates are available?

    A:

    Applications for senior and veteran's deductions are available online and in the Tax Collector's and Assessor's Office. The eligibility requirements are listed on the second page of the applications.
