Pruning Workshop

The homeowners who attended the Pruning Basics Workshop at the Bernardsville Public Library parking lot on Saturday, October 28, had a number of questions demonstrating a respect for trees and the multiple benefits they provide.  They all had the opportunity to participate with a few useful, small tools under the guidance of Dennis Galway and Joe Latino, our Shade Tree Committee tree expert volunteers.  This hands-on experience reinforced the basic principles Dennis covered: when to prune – spring (after flowering), summer and winter, but not in the fall when healing from cuts is slower and spores from decaying fungi are profuse. Pruning during dormancy is the preferred practice, and removal of dead wood can be done anytime, with storm-damaged broken limbs a priority.  The program was done with the cooperation of the Garden Club and the support of the Green Team and the Environmental Commission.
